A Deep Dive Into Office Recycling

All workplaces are under growing pressure to improve sustainability. From corporate ESG targets to employee expectations, recycling is no longer a “nice-to-have”, it is a core part of responsible business operations.

But how effective is office recycling in reality?

To answer that question, we asked a range of our users to complete a survey. The survey responses were from employees across multiple workplaces, the majority located in the United Kingdom.

What the Office Recycling Survey Planned to Achieve

The survey explored how employees feel about their organisation’s recycling systems. This included satisfaction levels, recycling bin effectiveness and whether signage and infrastructure could be improved.

The results show something many businesses will recognise:

Most workplaces have recycling programs — but many employees believe they could work much better.

As employees are a key stakeholder when it comes to office recycling it is so important that their opinions and feedback it taken into consideration. You may have bins but if they're not working correctly there is no really payback.

This study explores the findings in detail and explains how companies can improve recycling performance using better infrastructure, clearer signage and well-designed recycling systems. The ultimate aim will be to create a useful data set for workplaces to start with to improve their office recycling.

Workplace Recycling Statistics: What our Survey Data Reveals

The survey asked employees to rate their workplace recycling efforts on a 1–7 scale.

The average score was 4.4, indicating moderate satisfaction but significant room for improvement.

Distribution of responses

Rating Percentage
1 - Poor (Lots of Improvement) 15%
2 5%
3 20%
4 5%
5 15%
6 20%
7 - Great (No Improvement) 20%

Several key trends stand out:

  • 40% of employees rated their recycling systems highly (6 or 7).
  • 45% rated their workplace recycling below average (1–4).
  • Satisfaction varies dramatically between different organisations.

In practical terms, this means some workplaces have already implemented effective recycling systems. But unfortunately others are still struggling with the basics.

Often the differences between good workplace recycling schemes and poor office bins comes down to three key factors:

  • Clear recycling bin signage,
  • Properly designed recycling bins,
  • Consistent waste separation systems across all areas of their workplace (indoors and outdoors),

Do Offices Actually Recycle Properly?

Employees were asked a direct question:

“Do you feel that your workplace does office recycling right?”

The responses revealed a surprisingly mixed picture.

Survey results

  • 45% — Yes, but improvements are needed
  • 25% — Yes, our recycling works well
  • 25% — No, our workplace recycling is poor
  • 5% — Not applicable

This means only one in four employees believes their workplace recycling system is working perfectly.

Do Offices Recycle

The remaining majority either see clear weaknesses or feel their organisation is failing to recycle effectively. For many offices, the issue isn’t a lack of commitment to sustainability,  it is simply poor implementation.

Why Office Recycling Bins Often Fail

The effectiveness of any recycling program depends heavily on the bins employees interact with every day.

In the survey, employees were asked to rate whether their office recycling bins were suitable for workplace use. The responses showed considerable variation.

Most common ratings

  • Rating 1 - 18% of responses
  • Rating 2 - 14% of responses
  • Rating 3 - 25% of responses
  • Rating 4 - 25% of responses
  • Rating 5 - 18% of responses

People say workplace bins arent perfecr

These results suggest that many workplaces do provide recycling bins, but the systems are not always designed for maximum usability.

Typical problems include:

  • Insufficient recycling bins in key locations
  • Poorly labelled bins
  • Inconsistent bin colours
  • Bins that combine multiple waste streams
  • Recycling bins placed further away than general waste bins

Without clear guidance, employees often default to the easiest option — which usually means throwing everything into the nearest bin.

The Importance of Recycling Bin Signage

Even the best recycling bins won’t work effectively if employees don’t understand what goes where.

Clear signage is one of the most powerful tools for improving recycling accuracy.

In our survey, respondents were asked whether their workplace recycling signage could be improved.

1 12%
2 19%
3 25%
4 38%

The results show that many employees believe recycling signage could be clearer and more visible.

Poor signage often leads to contamination issues such as:

  • Food waste mixed with recyclables
  • Paper contaminated with liquids
  • Plastics thrown into general waste
  • Recyclable packaging incorrectly sorted

Using clear visual labels dramatically reduces these problems.

For example, many organisations improve recycling accuracy by installing recycling bin stickers that show exactly what items belong in each bin.

Why Recycling Stickers Improve Workplace Recycling Rates

Recycling behaviour in offices is heavily influenced by convenience and clarity.

When employees can instantly recognise the correct bin, recycling becomes much easier.

This is where recycling stickers and labels make a major difference.

Well-designed recycling labels typically include:

  • Simple readable text
  • Clear icons
  • Colour-coded waste categories
  • Examples of accepted materials

When these labels are applied directly to bins, employees no longer need to guess where items should go.

The Most Common Workplace Recycling Challenges

Looking across the survey data and typical workplace behaviour patterns, several recurring challenges appear.

1. Lack of employee awareness

Employees may want to recycle but don’t always know the correct process.

2. Confusing waste categories

Different bin colours or unclear labels create uncertainty. Including differences from public areas or across different sites.

3. Poor bin placement

If recycling bins are less accessible than general waste bins, participation drops quickly.

4. Contaminated recycling streams

Food waste or liquids placed in recycling bins can make the entire bin unusable.

5. Inconsistent signage

When signage varies across departments or floors, employees become unsure which bin to use.

These issues are rarely caused by a lack of environmental concern. Instead, they usually stem from systems that were not designed with user behaviour in mind.

How to Improve Office Recycling Systems

Based on the survey results and industry best practices, several practical improvements can dramatically increase workplace recycling rates.

1. Standardise recycling bins

Use consistent colours and categories across the entire workplace.

For example:

  • Blue — Paper
  • Lime green — Mixed recycling
  • Black — General waste

2. Install clear recycling signage

Large visual labels should be placed directly on each bin.

High-quality recycling stickers make waste separation far easier for employees.

3. Place bins in convenient locations

Recycling bins should be positioned in high-traffic areas such as:

  • Kitchens
  • Printer areas
  • Meeting rooms
  • Break areas

4. Educate employees

Simple recycling guides or onboarding information can dramatically improve recycling behaviour.

5. Maintain recycling stations

Overflowing bins quickly discourage participation. Regular waste collection keeps systems working smoothly.

The Business Benefits of Workplace Recycling

Better recycling systems offer several benefits beyond environmental impact.

Reduced waste disposal costs

Separating recyclable materials reduces the volume of general waste.

Improved ESG performance

Sustainability reporting increasingly includes waste management metrics.

Higher employee satisfaction

Many employees value environmentally responsible workplaces.

Stronger brand reputation

Customers and partners increasingly expect businesses to operate sustainably.

Even relatively small improvements — such as installing clear recycling signage and labels — can significantly improve recycling performance.

Choosing the Right Recycling Signage for Your Workplace

When selecting recycling signage, businesses should look for labels that are:

  • Durable,
  • Easy to keep clean,
  • Highly visible,
  • Consistent with local recycling rules,
  • Easy to understand

The Future of Workplace Recycling

The survey results highlight an encouraging trend: employees care about recycling and want their workplaces to do better.

However, the data also shows that many recycling programs fail because they rely on systems that are unclear, inconsistent or inconvenient.

The solution is not complicated.

By combining:

  • Well-designed recycling bins
  • Clear signage and stickers
  • Strategic bin placement
  • Consistent waste categories

companies can significantly improve recycling participation and reduce waste contamination.

Final Thoughts

Office recycling programs succeed when they are simple, visible, and easy for employees to use.

The survey data shows that many workplaces are already on the right track — but small improvements could dramatically increase effectiveness.

For organisations looking to upgrade their recycling infrastructure, clear recycling stickers and signage are one of the easiest and most cost-effective improvements available.
